build.com: Company Info and Coupon Guide

Build.com is a fairly large and well established home improvement retailer. This retailer is committed to providing the best selection and unmatched customer service. Their business excellence is reflected in their rankings in the Internet Retailer Magazine’s annual Top 500 List, where they consistently been placing and growing ranks since 2007.

Build.com originally began as a Computer Science master’s project by Christian Friedland and David Boctor at the California State University. At the time, Friedland worked for a local plumbing distributor and felt that he could give customers a better experience and a larger selection of plumbing fixtures made available online. This idea led to the creation of faucetdirect.com which launched and operated out of Freidland’s college apartment in Chico, California. The company first changed it’s name in 2005 to improvementdirect.com, and once again in 2010, finally deciding on a name of build.com. As of December 2013, the company employed just shy of 400 people.

The online store experience

When visiting the web store for the very first time, build.com will prompt you with a friendly pop-up window offering you to sign up for their free weekly newsletter. The email newsletter provides home improvement tips, DIY projects as well as exclusive sales not available for anyone else.

One of the more unique features of the site is the build.com price calculator. Here you can input in plain english what job you need done, and build.com will give you a free quote in seconds. For example your faucet is dripping and needs repair, you would simply visit the calculator found here and type in “repair faucet,” and build.com will spit out a price for you depending on your location.
