Kmart Coupons & Coupon Guide

Kmart is a subsidiary of Sears Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ: SHLD). This company is a giant merchandising company and part of ShopYourWay.com, a social shopping experience where members have the ability to earn points and receive benefits to create big savings overtime. Kmart offers customers quality products through a portfolio of exclusive brands that include Sofia by Sofia Vergara, Jaclyn Smith, Joe Boxer, Route 66 and Smart Sense. There are now over 1,200 Kmart stores across the United States, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Kmart was the brain child of Sebastian S. Kresge. Sebastian S. Kresge started out as a traveling salesman back in the late 1890’s. He took his savings from his job and invested in a five and dime store in Memphis and soon after opened another store in Detroit. These stores were named S.S. Kresge. After two years, he bought out his partner and gave up his rights to the Memphis store to own the Detroit store out right, which he partnered up with his brother in law. This store was named Kresge & Wilson Company.

By 1912, Kresge had 85 S.S. Kresge Stores and decided to incorporate them and put them on the New York Stock Exchange. They opened on the exchange on May 23, 1918. Kresge continued to save and invest in the company by opening more stores. By 1924, he had 257 S.S. Kresge Stores open and operating at full capacity. He invested in countless real estate deals enabling him to open up more stores. By 1929, he had 597 S.S. Kresge Stores open. Kresge retired in 1925 but the S.S. Kresge Stores continued to go on. The Great Depression and World War II effected business and caused some stores to close but in the end there were still 616 stores open and functioning without concern.

Harry Cunningham took over where Kresge left off and open what would become the first Kmart store on March 1, 1962, in a Michigan state city named Garden City. This store is still open and eighteen other stores opened in the same year. Within ten years, Kmart opened a chain of supermarkets by the name of Kmart Foods. The Kmart Foods brand is no longer viable, though there are quite a few Kmart Super Stores out there that also sell groceries. In 1965, the “Blue Light Special” was introduced. The Blue Light Special was a surprise discount that was offered to shoppers in the store. A sales associate would light a police light up and announce a special discount in a particular department of the store. Sadly, one year later, the great founder of the Kmart Stores Sebastian S. Kresge passed away on October 18, 1966.

As the Kmart came to life, some of the S.S. Kresge stores were poorly run and had to be transformed into something profitable. Jupiter Discount Stores, a deep discount store, opened up in place of the poorly functioning S.S. Kresge stores to maintain business and create a new brand. Kmart continued to thrive through the 70’s and forced some of its competition out of business. Now with three store brands, Kmart, Jupiter and Kresge, the three companies gave their competition Zayre, Ames, Hill’s and the MMG-McCrory Stores a run for their money. Stores like J.J. Newberry are no longer in business today. In 1977, the company changed the name of the corporation from S.S. Kresge to Kmart Corporation. By 1987, the Kresge and Jupiter stores were all closed and the Canadian stores were closed in 1994.

Before Walmart, who opened four months after Kmart, surpassed Kmart in 1990, Kmart was the second largest retail store in the United States. Sears held the number one spot. The following year the Blue Light Special was retired only to be brought back in the years 2001, 2005 and 2009. Unfortunately, during the 80’s and 90’s the corporate office focused on other company ventures such as The Sports Authority, Waldenbooks and Builders Square that caused the existing Kmart stores to be overlooked and very much out of date. The stores became considered rundown and business began to fall. Kmart tried a number of things to rebuild customer perception. The stores acquired brands by Jaclyn Smith, Martha Stewart, Lauren Hutton, Sesame Street, Thalia and Disney. Rosie O’Donnell and Penny Marshall became spokes models for the stores television ads. Two super stores were opened and later closed. Big Kmart came on the seen first in Chicago, Illinois, on April 23, 1997 featuring home decor, children’s clothes, and groceries. The logo was changed from the famous italicized K with the word Mart in turquoise to the K as a block letter and the word Mart in script placed on top of the K. The logo was again transformed in 2004 to the logo of today.

Though Kmart had made significant changes to the logo and remodeled the stores, under the leadership of Chuck Conway, chairman, and Mark Schwartz, president of the company, filed Chapter 11 on January 22, 2002. When Chuck Conway accepted the position of chairman of Kmart, he was given a loan of five million dollars. He and Mark Schwartz, along with other Kmart executives mismanaged the company, lied to the shareholders and conducted business much like Enron did. Due to this mismanagement, Conway was released from Kmart and asked to pay back his loan. Kmart had to close 300 stores and lay off 34,000 employees after the bankruptcy scandal, but bounced back like a true champion with the help of Edward Lampert of ESL Investments. Lampert stepped into the chairman position and ESL Investment held 53% of the companies holdings. The corporation’s name was changed again to Kmart Holdings Corporation and now trades on the NASDAQ. By the end of 2003, Kmart reported their first profitable quarter in years.

In 2004, Kmart bought out Sears and changed the corporation’s name to Sears Holding Corporation. The two brands were to remain as separate entities instead of merging into one. Kmart’s logo changed once again to a red blocked K with the word Mart printed underneath the K in lowercase blocked letters. The Kmart corporate office was moved to Hoffman Estates, Illinois and the previous location was sold to the Forbes Company, who owns the Somerset Collection Mall. After the merger, Kmart began to remodel stores and added some product lines like Craftsman, which was a brand only sold at Sears. They also added an appliance department featuring Kenmore Appliances. The Martha Stewart Living Kmart line came to a close after Martha Stewart went on television and proclaimed that after the merger her brand began to go down hill. By 2009, things were looking up when Kmart announced a sales increase of 0.5% every year from 2005 to 2009. Kmart is good at adapting to changes in its environment and is still forging ahead like a phoenix.
