Kohl’s Coupons & Savings

Kohl’s (NYSE: KSS) originally had its start as a chain of supermarkets in Southern Wisconsin in the 1940s. After the success in Wisconsin, Maxwell Kohl opened his first department store in Brookfield, which at the time was known as Kohl’s Department. The retailer offered high quality products in the price range that fell between the ridiculous prices of higher end stores, but above clearance pricing of discount stores to attract predominantly middle class consumers.

1972 saw Kohl’s purchased by the British-American Tobacco Company, but the Kohl family stayed in the business until 1979 when Hebrert Kohl became a Senator and an NBA team owner. The grocery stores were later sold off and only the department stores remained. Since then they’ve expanded to nearly 40 locations throughout the Midwest.

Kohl’s was purchased again by a group of investors in 1986, which continued their expansion and finally left the Midwest in 2003. There were 76 stores at the time, but reaching out to the West and East coasts allowed Kohl’s to open doors at more than 70 additional locations. Kohl’s truly became a national brand when they added designer lines from Vera Wang, Narciso Rodriguez and Peter Som.

Kohl’s continues to expand operations and gets high marks in many different areas from customer service to environmental safety. With stores branching from coast to coast, you can find them in nearly every state.
