The story of Walgreens began in 1901, with a small-scale drugstore in Chicago, owned by Charles Walgreen Sr.. Over the next decade, Walgreens grew to four stores on the south side of Chicago. In 1922 Walgreen began operating stores away from residential areas, and in the mid-1920’s there were 44 stores across Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin. The company continued to grow over the decades, until finally maturing into the giant retailer it is today.
